Summer Professional Learning Opportunities

This summer, many teachers will be working with leadership from the curriculum coaches to articulate curriculum and design assessments to align with the Iowa Core.  In addition, the curriculum team will be offering courses that are eligible for teacher quality funding (up to $375 per course). The courses listed below are eligible for Teacher Quality funding:

Mathematical Practices in Secondary Math

Target Audience: Secondary Math Teachers

        Participants in this course will learn about using the Mathematical Practices in the Common Core State Standards to create a context for students to think mathematically. The two days will be spent experiencing and creating learning tasks that engage students, promote productive group work, and increase mathematical understanding. Participants will work collaboratively to design and plan implementation of learning tasks linked to the Iowa Core Standards.

When the Daily 5 Met the Common Core
Target Audience: Literacy teachers in grades K-5

This course is designed for educators who are currently utilizing the Daily 5 structure. As we live in the teaching world of Common Core, we are called to provide increased opportunities for students to read complex text and produce high quality written work for a specific audience and purpose. Teachers are working hard to balance the demands of Common Core and the structure of Daily 5. Teachers are asking, “Do these two worlds really fit together?  
Participants enrolled in “When Daily Five Met the Common Core” will analyze ELA Common Core standards, briefly review the foundation of Daily 5, examine Timothy Shanahan’s literacy framework, develop Core-aligned independent learning activities to be completed during Daily 5, and collaborate with colleagues.

Disciplinary Literacy
Target Audience: 6-12 teachers

       This course will provide teachers with ideas and strategies to support students in effectively using the communication processes of reading, writing, and discussion to make meaning and promote learning in all subject areas.  Participants will have the opportunity to explore and share techniques to engage students in purposeful reading, meaningful writing, and productive dialogue in the classroom.

iPads in the Classroom
Target Audience: All  PK-12 teachers (who have not already taken this course)

Dates: This is a 2-day course that will be offered twice this summer.

       This course will provide teachers with strategies and ideas to support students using iPads to enhance the Iowa Core as well as support teachers to enhance teaching and the management of devices within their classroom.  Please note that iPads will not be provided--you will need to bring one from your building (if available) or a personal iPad.

Target Audience: PK-12 teachers who have taken the initial iPad course or have had multiple experiences implementing iPads in the classroom.

Advanced iPads: Taking it to the Next Level


Google Apps 101


Target Audience: All PK-12 teachers 

Instructor: Jamie Fath and Curriculum Team

Dates: July 25th and 26th

  Looking to integrate more Google Apps into your classroom?  This class will focus on strategies and ideas to support students using Google Apps to enhance the Iowa Core. Day one of this course will be required attendance to the mini Google Summit in Van Meter and day two will be back at SEP strategizing ways to implement ideas from the mini summit into your classroom to enhance learning. We will be using the Google suite of tools, laptops and Chromebooks in this course.

Visual Phonics
Target Audience: PreK-2nd Grade Teachers, Reading Specialists, ESL Teachers, Special Education Teachers

Course participants will learn the Visual Phonics system, its philosophical and research bases, and applications to a variety of student learning settings including producing and comprehending 45 phonics hand shapes and symbols. Flashcards will be provided to the Southeast Polk participants.

Teacher Quality Funding
All courses listed above are eligible for Teacher Quality funding (up to $375). These district courses are pre-approved for funding. Once you register, no further action is needed. You will complete payroll sheets onsite at the completion of the course.
